Reading is central and deliberately unrestricted: philosophy, literature, psychology, history, medicine, religion, ethics, Japanese thought and culture, nature writing, memoir, consciousness, and the long human argument about meaning.
Nature
Forests, trees, land, gardens, growing food, seasons, wilderness. Not recreation , a second vocabulary for thinking about time, mortality, attention, growth, decay, endurance, and human scale.
Making
Woodworking, gardening, building things carefully with his hands. Craft is a form of attention, and attention is the thing most institutions inadvertently ration.
